A holy trifecta of the artist by Dorothy Goldman: The artist as the artist, the artist as seen by the artist, and the artist as seen by the viewer… in fact, it’s really 4 views of the artist being that there’s the painting itself as a whole. Shut the front door! It’s too good. I don’t post many representational paintings, though I do love them. And this painting spoke to me on myriad levels. As a painter myself, I fell in love with this painting upon first sight. Note how the artist painted herself holding three brushes in total? When painting, especially a representational one, it’s important to not try to paint a painting with just one brush. Why’s that? Because it muddies your color palette. Having multiple brushes for lights, shades, and chromas is paramount for ensuring one’s paints stay true to representation when applying to the substrate (technically, it’s called “brush organization” and it requires thought and practice). This is a painting that has real honesty within the process of painting. It’s a painting with such attention to detail that any painter can appreciate. I highlight these features so that even non-painters can appreciate the details. Painting is a process! Whether a painter learns from being self taught or learning from schooling/mentoring… it’s not just intuitive. Painting requires discipline and dedication. And this painting by Goldman illustrates all of that. Love, love, love. Oil on stretched canvas.
