I love nudes in art! And this nude oil painting from the 1960s is no exception. The artist did something I’ve never seen in a painting before: they expertly stitched together two pieces of canvas to form one. Perhaps this was to emphasize the duality yet sameness of the two models. Two different models with varying physical appearances and personalities sewn together with a single threaded seam. We’re all different in our own ways but living on the same stage of life. That is a powerful reality housed within the fabric of humanity— our individual differences are what can connect us. I’d also like to point out how the figure on the left is reminiscent of figures painted by late great European Impressionist artists. You like Matisse? You’ll like this painting :).
